IMD Issues Alerts for Heavy Rainfall Across Several States

As the monsoon season intensifies, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts for heavy rainfall across various states in India. A low-pressure system over West Bengal and Jharkhand, coupled with another over the Arabian Sea, is expected to bring widespread rain to Maharashtra and other regions over the next few days.

Severe Rainfall Predictions for Gujarat and Maharashtra

The IMD has placed Gujarat under a red alert, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. This comes as the state braces for potentially life-threatening weather conditions. Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Mumbai and several other districts in Maharashtra, including Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, as they prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall on August 24. The rainfall in these regions is expected to exceed 64.5 mm within 24 hours, posing risks of flooding and disruption to daily life.

Rainfall Expected in Multiple States

The impact of the low-pressure systems is not confined to Gujarat and Maharashtra. The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and several northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Coastal regions along the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and parts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal are likely to experience squally weather, with wind speeds reaching up to 55 kmph.

Orange Alert for Western Maharashtra and Vidarbha

In addition to the Konkan region, the IMD has issued an orange alert for Pune and Satara districts in western Maharashtra, as well as Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gondia districts in Vidarbha. These areas are expected to witness heavy rainfall, potentially leading to waterlogging and other weather-related disruptions. The alert for these regions extends through August 25 and 26, with continuous rainfall predicted.

Respite for Delhi Amidst Record Rainfall

While several states brace for heavy rains, the national capital of Delhi can expect a brief respite. The IMD predicts a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rainfall on August 24, accompanied by thunderstorms. Despite the wet weather, a yellow alert has been issued, signaling only potential minor disruptions. This comes after Delhi experienced an unusually wet August, recording 269.9 mm of rainfall—the highest in a decade.

As the monsoon intensifies, the IMD's alerts highlight the need for preparedness across several states, particularly in Gujarat and Maharashtra, where the risk of severe weather is most pronounced. Residents in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and stay informed of further updates. Meanwhile, Delhiites can enjoy a brief reprieve from the rains, albeit with caution due to the possibility of thunderstorms.
